Lumbar disc disease can be extremely debilitating and have a large impact on your ability to perform required work tasks, participate in your favorite activities, or simply enjoy your day-to-day life. This condition involves significant back pain caused by compromised or injured spinal discs. It can be caused by many factors including simple wear and tear or traumatic injury. While the condition rarely begins solely due to a major injury, trauma to the area can greatly increase the chances of debilitating pain and progressing injuries.
There are two main causes for the pain associated with lumbar disc disease:
Protein buildup in the space between discs can irritate the surrounding nerves, causing pain and further swelling which leads to more protein buildup.
- Abnormal micro-motion instability
The outer rings of the disc, known as annulus fibrosis, can begin to wear down. Once worn down they are longer capable of absorbing stress on the spine appropriately and can cause micro-motion along the associated segment of the vertebrae. This motion combined with the above mentioned inflammatory proteins produces the sensation of pain in the local area.
Because discs do not have their own blood supply, they are not able to heal the same way that other tissues do, meaning that even a small injury can cause a degenerative cascade and lead to the disc wearing out. This fairly common condition affects about 30% of people between the ages of 30-50.
Taking into consideration the pain and reduced mobility associated with this condition, recovery can seem daunting even at the best of times. Thankfully, over an extended period of time the pain associated with this condition does tend to decrease thanks to less inflammatory proteins in the area. As the disc collapses further, it typically settles into a stable position, eliminating the micro-motion which can aggravate the condition.

I was injured in a car accident and sustained a fractured ankle, developing debilitating chronic pain. Joseph was very caring about me and how my case affected my family. He worked tirelessly on my case until we won and my case is now well known in the legal community. Throughout this whole ordeal, the only thing I can be thankful for is that Joseph was my lawyer, his care, compassion and experience made all the difference.
I can’t thank Joseph Campisi enough. I was involved in a serious car accident and I suffered serious orthopaedic injuries which prevent me from ever returning to the job that I had at the time of the accident. Joseph and his team were always accessible, even on evenings or weekends. The settlement far exceeded my expectations and it will provide financial security for me and my family.
I feel fortunate that I was referred to Cesar Carranza. I suffered a spinal cord injury when I fell off a trailer. From the initial meeting when Cesar came to the hospital, he alleviated most of my troubles and I was able to focus on getting better. Cesar and Joseph settled my case quickly, and I felt supported through the whole process, not only by them but also by an awesome medical and rehabilitation team that they assembled.
My father was in a horrible crash and he suffered a severe brain injury as well as serious fractures. Joseph Campisi came highly recommended and he promised us that he would be relentless in representing my father. He kept his promise.
